Halloween is coming up and I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to discuss some sensory friendly Halloween costume ideas. Halloween can be a difficult holiday for children with sensory sensitivities, especially those that have a hard time tolerating certain pieces of clothing and fabrics. As parents, we all want our children to feel included and be able to participate fully in all aspects of their childhood. This includes participating in Halloween, even if they refuse to wear the store bought costume we got from Target. Here is my Ultimate Sensory Friendly Halloween Costume List:
1.Pajama Costumes: They make so many cute pajamas for little one’s nowadays. There are several pajamas that would make the perfect sensory friendly Halloween costume. My boys have several sets including Buzz Lightyear Pajamas from Toy Story (as pictured), Fireman, and Cowboy. You can even usually find skeleton and pumpkin pajamas this time of year which would be adorable. I love this costume idea because it lets your kids be comfortable, while still dressing up and participating fully.
2.Sweatshirt Costumes: There are so many cute costume style hoodies out there on the market for kids. My oldest son is obsessed with transformers at the moment, and this year we purchased him an Optimus Prime costume style hoodie (as pictured). This hoodie would make the perfect simple Halloween costume with no fuss. I have seen several other styles and versions with popular television characters ranging from Paw Patrol to Blaze and the Monster Machines. The wide variety of characters and styles of hoodies makes this versatile to suit most kids interests and preferences for Halloween costumes.
3.Regular Clothes Costumes: There are plenty of creative Halloween costumes that involve the use of regular clothes. If you can identify the types of clothing that your child can tolerate and come up with a simple costume idea that involves that clothing, this makes Halloween more tolerable for your little one. A few Halloween’s ago, my boys dressed up as minions. We purchased knit minion hats (as pictured) and then had them dress in yellow long sleeve shirts and denim overalls. A super simple costume, but we didn’t fight over getting a costume on over their clothes or wearing a mask. It made for a fun and super easy Halloween that year.
4.Box Style Costumes: Box and suspenders style costumes are another sensory friendly costume option. Since the costume just hangs on the shoulders it eliminates some of the discomfort that a more form fitting costume may have for little ones. Last year for Halloween we got these super cute box style fire truck costumes from Pottery Barn Kids (as pictured). They were so easy to get on the kids, and the best part was the boys wore their Pajamas right under them during trick or treating. We got tons of compliments on these costumes.
5.Weighted Costumes: Another idea for a sensory friendly costume idea is to add weight to the costume itself. Weight and compression provides constant deep pressure for little ones, which is proven to be calming and comforting. When the weighted or compression garment is worn it can have a desensitizing effect allowing the child to tolerate noxious stimuli from their environment at a higher rate that without it. If your child benefits from a weighted vest you could consider wearing their recommended weighted or compression vest underneath their store bought costume. Another idea is to purchase a costume with built in weights such as these weighted dress up items from Fun and Function (as pictured from www.funandfunction.com).
